AI Research Tools

AI research tools that find, read and summarise papers and sources with citations, so you can check every claim against the original.

How to choose an AI research tool

AI research tools find sources, read them and summarize what they say, with citations you can check. The best ones never ask you to trust them blindly: every claim links back to a page or a paper. Before you compare features, decide where your answer lives. If it lives on the open web, such as news, products or how something works, you want a web answer engine. If it lives in published studies, you want a scholarly tool that searches research papers directly.

Web research with citations. Perplexity searches the web and answers in plain language with numbered citations, and its Research mode runs many searches on its own to write a longer report. Its free plan includes citations in every answer, and paid plans raise the limits. Perplexity also makes the Comet browser, covered in our best AI browser guide.

Answers from scientific papers. Consensus takes a plain question and summarizes what peer reviewed studies found, which suits students and health or science writers. Elicit goes further for literature reviews: it searches over 138 million papers on its free plan and pulls details such as methods and outcomes into a comparison table.

Checking whether a finding held up. Scite shows whether later papers supported or contradicted a study through its Smart Citations, which helps before you build an argument on one result. It is a paid tool with a free trial.

Free discovery and citation maps. Semantic Scholar, run by the nonprofit Ai2, is a free search engine indexing over 200 million papers. ResearchRabbit starts from papers you already like and maps related work, authors and citations, with a free plan for focused reviews.

Research on your own sources. When the material is already in hand, such as lecture notes, PDFs or readings, a notebook that answers only from your uploads is often better. Gemini Notebook, Google's notebook built from NotebookLM, does exactly that; see how to use NotebookLM and Gemini Notebook for studying.

Three habits keep any of these tools honest. Open the cited source and read at least the abstract and methods before you quote it. Prefer tools that show where each sentence came from. And check prices on the vendor's own page, since plans change often.
