AI Writing Tools

Assistants that help you draft, rewrite, edit and polish, from grammar and tone to long form fiction and on brand marketing copy.

How to choose an AI writing tool

AI writing tools fall into three groups, and most people only need one of them. Editors check what you already wrote. Grammarly and Hemingway Editor flag errors, unclear sentences and tone problems while leaving the words yours. Rewriters such as QuillBot, Wordtune and DeepL Write offer new versions of a sentence when you are stuck or writing in a second language. Drafting assistants produce new text from a prompt. General chat assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT fill that role for most people, while specialist tools target one kind of writing: Jasper for marketing teams, and Sudowrite and Novelcrafter for fiction.

Start with the job. Students and professionals who write emails, essays and reports usually get the most from an editor that works inside the apps they already use, plus a chat assistant for outlines and feedback. Writers working in a second language often prefer a rewriter, because it keeps their meaning and fixes phrasing. Novelists need tools that remember characters, plot and world details across a whole manuscript, which general assistants handle poorly.

Then check three practical things before you pay. First, where does it work: a browser extension, a desktop app, or only its own editor? Second, what does the free plan really include? Several tools here are free for basic checks and paid for rewriting or generative features. Third, what happens to your text? If you write for school or work, read the privacy page and your school or employer's policy on AI use.

Our comparisons go deeper on the common choices. Grammarly vs QuillBot covers checking against paraphrasing, Is Hemingway Editor free? explains what you get without paying, and the best AI writing assistant for fiction ranks story tools. If you write inside Google Docs, see how to use Claude in Google Docs. Prices change often, so every tool page links to the vendor's own site for current plans.
