How to use Claude in Google Docs: install Anthropic's Claude for Google Workspace addon from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open any Doc, Sheet or Slide, choose Extensions > Claude > Open Claude, sign in on a paid Claude plan, then ask Claude to draft, rewrite or analyze the file you already have open. One install covers Docs, Sheets and Slides. The addon is in public beta for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, not the Free plan.

This guide walks through install, everyday prompts, edit modes, privacy limits, and when Claude's own Docs, Slides and Design artifacts (or Gemini / Grammarly) are a better fit. Facts were checked against Anthropic's product and Help Center pages on October 15, 2026.

What Claude for Google Workspace is

Claude for Google Workspace is a Google Workspace Marketplace addon that puts a Claude sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. Per Anthropic's launch article and Help Center guide, Claude reads the file you have open (and anything you select), then can edit that file in place. Changes show up under your name in Google version history.

It is not the same as:

  • Claude Docs / Slides / Design: artifacts you create inside Claude itself and export to Word, PowerPoint or Google formats (covered in our Claude Docs, Slides and Design guide).
  • Google Workspace connectors on claude.ai: those let Claude search Drive, Gmail and Calendar from chat; the addon does the reverse and brings Claude into the open file.
  • Claude in Chrome: a browser extension that works across web pages, not a Docs sidebar.

You need a Claude account on a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) and a Google account allowed to install Marketplace apps.

How to install Claude in Docs, Sheets and Slides

Install for yourself (about two minutes)

  1. Open the official Claude listing in the Google Workspace Marketplace and click Install.
  2. Choose the Google account you use for Docs, Sheets and Slides, review the permissions, and click Allow.
  3. Reload any Docs, Sheets or Slides files you already had open.
  4. Open a file, go to Extensions > Claude > Open Claude, sign in with your Claude account, and optionally turn on connectors you already use in Claude.

One Marketplace install adds Claude to all three apps. You do not install three separate extensions. Anthropic's Help Center also notes the keyboard shortcut Alt+/ (Option+/ on Mac); type "Claude" to jump to the menu item.

If your work Google account blocks installs

Many organizations block Marketplace apps by default. If Install is greyed out or you see "This application is not allowed by your administrator," only a Google Workspace admin can fix it. Per the Help Center, an admin can either:

  • Allowlist Claude under Apps > Google Workspace Marketplace apps, or
  • Use Admin install on the Marketplace listing for everyone, specific groups, or organizational units (admin install works even when user installs are blocked).

Browser requirements

The beta works in Chrome, Edge and Safari. Firefox can load the sidebar, but Anthropic says actions do not complete there. If you are signed into more than one Google account in the same browser window, open the file in a single account profile: multiaccount sessions are a common cause of "Claude can't read or change your file."

How to use Claude in Google Docs day to day

Open the sidebar, leave it open while Claude works (closing it stops the current task), and describe the outcome rather than every micro step. Select text first when you want Claude focused on one section.

Useful Doc prompts Anthropic lists (and that map cleanly to real work):

  • Rewrite an executive summary so it leads with the recommendation and fits in one paragraph.
  • Cut a long brief without dropping numbered requirements.
  • Turn "Next steps" notes into a table with owner, action and due date.
  • Flag defined terms that appear in a contract but were never defined.
  • Normalize heading case and fix section numbering.

In Docs, Claude can also propose text changes as suggestion cards you apply or dismiss one at a time. Direct edits otherwise land as normal edits under your Google identity. Use Undo or File > Version history to roll back.

What Docs Claude cannot do in this beta: read, reply to or resolve comments; accept or reject existing Google suggestions; create, rename or reorder document tabs (it can still edit tab content). Paste a comment into the sidebar chat if you need Claude to act on feedback.

How to use Claude in Google Sheets and Slides

Sheets

Ask Claude to explain how a total is calculated, normalize messy date columns, fix #N/A VLOOKUPs, build a model on a new tab from an Inputs sheet, or add a sensitivity table and chart. Claude can write formulas, build pivot tables and native Sheets charts, and for some cleaning jobs pull a range into Python and write results back.

Limits worth knowing: Connected Sheets tabs backed by BigQuery cannot be read or edited until you extract rows into a regular tab (Data > Data connectors > Extract). Claude also cannot create triggers, custom menus or scheduled refreshes.

Slides

Ask Claude to draft a short update from speaker notes, split a wall of text slide, make titles parallel and short, restyle a deck from the title slide's fonts and colors, or add a chart that matches the deck theme. Claude builds from your existing layouts so new slides match the rest of the deck, and it can flag overlapping elements or hard to read text.

Charts Claude inserts are images, not live linked Sheets charts, so they will not update when numbers change. Ask Claude to regenerate, or update linked charts yourself. Inserting an image from a web address always needs your approval.

Ask before edits vs Accept all edits

At the bottom of the sidebar, Anthropic gives two modes:

ModeWhat happens
Ask before edits (default)Claude summarizes the planned change in plain language and waits for Allow.
Accept all editsClaude applies ordinary content edits without pausing. It still stops for links, external images, web addresses, or anything that changes someone's access to the file.

Regardless of mode, Claude cannot share the file, change ownership, create menus or scheduled automations, or load arbitrary web pages into the file. Security review actions (links, web images, access changes) always need a yes from you. There is no "always allow."

Privacy: what Claude can and cannot see

Google grants the addon two permissions: show a sidebar, and view/manage the document, spreadsheet or presentation it was opened in. Anthropic's Help Center is explicit that the extension does not request Drive wide, Gmail, Calendar or contacts access by default. Claude sees the open file, your selection, anything you attach in the sidebar (up to 20 files per message; 30 MB per document, 10 MB per image), and any Claude connectors you turn on.

Anthropic states it does not use this content to train models, and that use of data from Google Workspace APIs follows Google's Limited Use rules. Inputs and outputs are deleted from Anthropic's systems within 30 days except as described in Anthropic's retention docs. Chat history for the sidebar is stored locally in your browser per file. It does not sync across devices, and a File > Make a copy starts a fresh chat. Collaborators see Claude's edits attributed to you; they do not see your sidebar conversation.

Enterprise extras (Compliance API, customer managed encryption keys, OpenTelemetry audit export) apply on Enterprise plans. HIPAA ready organizations are not covered for this extension. Do not use it with protected health information. Third party inference (Bedrock, Vertex, Azure) is not supported in the beta; you sign in with a Claude account.

When to use Claude Docs artifacts instead

Stay in the Google addon when the file already lives in Drive, collaborators are editing in Docs/Sheets/Slides, and you need in place edits with version history. Switch to Claude's native Docs, Slides and Design when you are starting from a blank page inside Claude, want Free plan access (artifacts are on Free; the Workspace addon is not), or need Motion / Dashboards workflows that live in Claude.

For polished decks from a prompt with less Google friction, Gamma is still a strong dedicated presentation tool. See our best AI tools for PowerPoint guide. For everyday grammar and tone while you type across the web, Grammarly / Superhuman Go remains the lighter habit (see how to use Superhuman Go). For a second brain workspace rather than a single file sidebar, Notion AI fits better. Students who live in Google Notebooks should also compare NotebookLM. And if your team is ChatGPT first, ChatGPT still helps via copy and paste or its own document features. It does not replace this native Docs sidebar.

Who this is for

  • Writers and operators who already draft in Google Docs and want Claude without constant copy and paste.
  • Analysts who clean Sheets or explain formulas without leaving the grid.
  • Anyone building decks that must stay on a shared Google Slides theme.
  • Teams whose admin can allowlist or admin install Marketplace apps.

Skip it (for now) if you are on Claude Free, stuck on Firefox, working only in uploaded Word/Excel/PowerPoint files inside Drive (convert them first with File > Save as Google Docs/Sheets/Slides), or need HIPAA coverage.

FAQ

Is Claude for Google Workspace free?

No. Anthropic's Help Center says the addon is in beta for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Claude Free includes Docs, Slides and Design artifacts inside Claude, but not this Google sidebar. See Claude pricing for current Pro and Max rates.

Do I install Claude separately for Docs, Sheets and Slides?

No. One install from the Marketplace adds Claude to all three.

Can Claude see my other Google Drive files?

Not by default. Google limits the extension to the single file it is opened in. If you enable a Google Drive connector in Claude, Claude can use that separately. It is off by default.

Does Claude work in Word, Excel or PowerPoint files opened in Drive?

No. Google does not support extensions in those uploaded Office files. Convert with File > Save as Google Docs, Save as Google Sheets, or Save as Google Slides, then open Claude in the new file.

How do I undo something Claude changed?

Use Undo for the last change, or File > Version history > See version history to restore an earlier version. Every Claude edit is a normal edit attributed to you.

Claude isn't in my Extensions menu: what now?

Reload the file after install. Confirm you are signed into the same Google account used for the install. If it still missing, ask your Workspace admin whether Claude is allowlisted or admin installed. Word/Excel/PowerPoint uploads will never show it until you convert them.
